Header image stopped appearing on homepage and in editor

I also tried the recent 4.4 update with no success.

I have a recent install,using a twenty eleven child.

I was able to upload various sizes of the header I wanted to use, but could not get the 4.3.1/twenty eleven child to actually used the scaled down header; WP Header left side editor messages said that it should be 1000×288 (I think).
Finally I edited the css:

height: auto;
margin-left: 90px;
margin-bottom: -7px;
width: 80%;
}

That worked fine.
Now, some days later no header appears on the site/page, nor do the images actually appear when uploaded: Only the text statistics verify that they have access the the actual images I select.
