• I’ve enabled the mobile module and it seems to be working well – the only problem is that it uses the existing header image and resizes it which means mobile devices are downloading and then having to handle a large image.

It would be great if there was some way of telling the module to use a different (resized image) that was more suitable for mobile devices.

    Its on

The header image is 940px × 238px and 77.13 kB in size (yes I probably should shrink it).

When that is put onto a mobile site it is obviously a much smaller image so can be a lot smaller. Google insights estimates I could shrink it by some huge amount but I suspect if I did then it would look pretty lousy on a full sized screen.

    Thanks for the URL Steve!

While the mobile theme won’t optimize your images automatically for mobile, Photon will. Have you thought about activating Photon?

It’s a free service that mirrors your images on our CDN, optimizes them for all devices, then serves them to your visitors in a really fast manner. One of the best features of Photon is that it will resize your images and deliver optimized versions of them to mobile users which prevents downloading unnecessarily large files.

Last time I tried photon it was a bit of a disaster. I already optimise most of my images – I guess I’ll have to try to find a happy compromise of image file size if there is no way of forcing the mobile theme to use a specific mobile specific image.
