• Hi, I am kinda new to wordpress. Pictures I have taken myself work fine but the ones I get from Google images are fuzzy regardless of the size. What is the trick to using the many free images on the web?? Many thanks !!!

  • shouldn’t be a difference. there’s no trick I’m aware of. Must be something else goin on.
The header sometimes forces images to to fit.
The dpi for the image has to be high enough, I know you said “regardless of size” but have you tried embedding it in a post, just to test?

the ones I get from Google images

I hate to break this to you, but images that you see on Google image search are not free images that you can use without permission.

Can you give us an example of one of these images? I mea a link to a page/post that you’re uisng it on so that we can see just how it looks?

here is the site I have started. pcrcaz.com

No matter what the dimensions I get fuzzy image. thanks

What is the size of the original image that you uploaded for the header area?

It looks like you’ve used a low-resolution image file and it’s been up-sized to let it fill in to the width of the header. No matter what, you must start out with an image file that is at least as big as the area that you need it for or bigger. Do not expand the image, only shrink it.

The problem that most people don’t realise is that pictures really don’t work the way that they do on the TV rime shows where someone just zooms and enhances the image file to make it all cyrstal clear again. That is just not possible to do.

ok that makes sense. The header area is supposed to be 1000×288. All the images I have tried are greater than that. Any idea what the minimum mb should be?

There’s no minimum file size. It’s the image dimensions in pixels that matter.

What are the pixel dimensions of the image that you are uploading? If it’s greater then the header area that you have there, then I’d be checking the file that you have.

Remember also that just because a file is 1000 x 500 pixels doesn’t mean that it’s a clear and sharp image. It could very easily have been up-scaled from a 20 x 15 pixel image and look… just terrible. Is there a way that you can upload the actual original image file that you are trying to use somewhere? That way we can see if the problem is with that image.

Ok I just uploaded one I found that is 1000 x 288 and it looks good. I really appreciate the help. I will keep looking for more images. Do you have any sites you could recommend for free pics of patriotic events etc? Thanks again.

One of the very few places that I know of is Stock Exchange at https://sxc.hu The domain makes it look a bit dodgy, but it’s a very good resource. There’s a lot there, but it’s the same as every other place – make sure that you check the licence restrictions for each individual image before you use it. Most are fine, but some have a few more restrictions.

I am having trouble getting my images to look clear on a new website I am working on for myself. I have tried them at several different sizes and resolutions and the image when you click on it is fine but in the website is fuzzy. I have checked the maximum pixel width for my theme which is 584 & I exported from Lightroom to this width and resolution of 72dpi but they still look fuzzy in the website. I tried bigger, different resolution and 100 pixel width I as suggested by WordPress) but nothing fixes it.
Any clues hwy? and how to fix it?
