• Hi,

    Here’s my site: https://www.dean-and-dean.co.uk

I just moved my files from my main domain to this subdomain above. But since doing this, no header shows up (pilcrow theme so should have large picture across the top) and more importantly, the home page can’t link to any of the other pages.

I’d be very very grateful of any help you can give me – posters are going up today, yes, with the url in a prominent position!

    Cheers,
    Cat

  • The image code seems to be there (hence the broken image box). You should make sure your header image still exists.

Also, try looking in header.php and putting in the URL of the image where it should be.

Feel free to ask for clarification if needed.

    Hope that helped

    Hi PiMan,

Thanks so much for replying – I really appreciate it – that sorted the header out! Much relief…

Would you have any advice for the pages / menu?

    Cat

    No problem!

Tell me if this is what you did:

You built your wordpress site, let’s say under example.com. Now you went into your FTP server and moved all the WP files to example.com/blog.

    Is that right?

If so, please let me know and DO NOT DELETE ANY FILES FROM YOUR FTP OR DATABASE.

If not, let me know what it is that you did exactly.

This seems to be a common problem so don’t worry

If you did the first one, please refer to

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL

to properly change your Site URL. All of the information is stored on your database, the FTP files only provide information to access that.

For now, if you still have your old content, you can re-post them (which can be a pain!)

That’s exactly what I did – happily without deleting anything. Thanks very much for the link to changing the url properly – I’ll check that out just now.

Thanks again for replying (and so quickly) – it’s made a BIG difference.

    No problem!

Feel free to post back with your results / further questions.

    Hi there PiMan,

Thanks, I’m afraid I do have further questions! I checked out the documentation you suggested, but I haven’t managed to solve the problem yet.

    Here’s what I’ve done:

    1. Domain Name Change (in database) (lots of changes made)
    2. Changing URL directly in database (I followed the instructions but didn’t need to do anything – correct url in place already).
    3. Changed wp-config: both wp_siteurl and wp_home
    4. Relocate Constant

I guess I’m missing something as I’m still getting the ‘404 not found’ error message for every page, except the home page.

The other thing is, after each step above, I’ve tried to publish a new page to test, but these new pages are also coming up with the 404.

If I could just make all new pages, I could easily re-post everything – I can still access all my old content and there isn’t too much of it.

    Any help much appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Cat

Do you have access to your backended site?
What hosting service are you using?

Otherwise, the fastest solution (that is guaranteed at this point) is to…

    1. Save all of your files / back them up (everything… including the entire database)

    2. Remove WordPress Completely from the new domain.

    3. Re install it with a new database

    4. Re-create your website.

If you have not modified your wordpress files to much, this can be a simple task.

If you have, however, please reply back so we can start working on a solution to the current problem.

    *Sorry for the delay*

    Hope that helped.

    A Quick Update!

I also get this error on your site:

“Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header() in /home/catdeanc/public_html/dean-and-dean.co.uk/wp-content/themes/pilcrow/index.php on line 16”

Check line 16 in index.php and make sure all the code is working. Feel free to post snippets if you need help.

    Check my previous post.

    Hope that helped!

    Hi thanks for that PiMan,

I do have access to the backend, and I’m using uk2.net. But on balance, I think I’ll re-install, as I’m pretty new to this and there’s only 10 pages or so and just one image in the header.

I’ll let you know how I get on.
    Many thanks again PiMan,

    Cat

    Hello PiManIII,

Just to let you know that I uninstalled & recreated, and am now up and running again, thank goodness.

Our posters have been going out & we’ve already got quite a few people waiting to sign up, so I am very very relieved to have the website working properly!

Knowing I could come back to you with more questions made such a difference – many thanks indeed for all your help.

    Very best wishes,
    Cat

No problem! I am glad I could help!

Feel free to post back with any further questions!
