  • Do you have a local copy of the theme’s files? If so, just upload the functions.php file to ~/wp-content/themes/yourtheme via FTP.

No, I am just helping out a friend, and I am not using FTP nor do I have a backup. It wouldn’t be the end of the world to loose it, there is almost nothing there yet. But how do I get around it?

The theme must be downloadable from somewhere, whether it is free or not. Just download it again, extract the files and re-upload the functions.php file to the correct location, making sure to overwrite the old one.

But I cant get into the admin! ?? Nor the website….

Just replace the file using either your ftp client or the file manager in your hosts control panel.

as Falcon1986 said above, use FTP – you don;t need to be able to get into your WordPress admin.

Alternatively your host may have a clunky file manager in their hosting control panel which would enable you to upload files.

I still can’t get this to work. Can’t get my FTP to work, and also I don’t have access the host site. I am only helping out.

Isn’t there any other way of fixing this?

I understand how playing around with the functions.php can make the site blank, but how on earth does it limit me from accessing my dash board?

    I am so screwed!

By the way I am working directly on the https://www.ask-design.dk/wp-admin, this is also where I upload themes etc.

That is why I am screwed…

    Welcome to PHP.

    Rule 1: Always backup.
    Rule 2: Always backup.

There is no way of fixing this without re-uploading the original functions.php file.

Anyway, is this your website? If it is, then follow this:

    1. Visit TwentyTen Theme
    2. Download theme
    3. Open and find functions.php
    4. Move / Save the functions.php file from here.

You need to copy this file and replace (overwrite) the broken functions.php via FTP or via the server control panel.

    Hope this helps.

I still can’t get this to work. Can’t get my FTP to work, and also I don’t have access the host site. I am only helping out.

Bottom line…. If you have no access to the server where the files are hosted, if you cannot use ftp, and you do not have access to the control panel on your friends account, you have essentially no other course of action to take. You probably can’t fix it.

Here is one last thing for you to try. Go here and login: https://www.ask-design.dk/wp-login.php

after you login and it takes you to a blank page, paste this next link in your browser address bar and click “go”, or just click on the link below.

    https://www.ask-design.dk/wp-admin/themes.php

If that doesn’t work for you, if it doesn’t take you to your appearance page where you can change the theme – and it very well may not – you’re all done until your friend gives you direct access to the files on the hosted account.
