• Hi, I really hope someone can help?? When I log in to my admin page, the format/interface has completely changed to a very basic list (like plain text, all down the left hand side), which is completely unusable, so I can’t edite or add to my site at all! I thought maybe it was an error with WordPress, but it hasn’t resolved itself and has been like this all day. I host my website with 123-Reg. I really hope I wont have to re-install www.ads-software.com here and start all over again. I’ve even tried opening it up in another browser (Safari I normally use, and Firefox I’ve tried). ?? Has anyone experienced this problem before, or know what is causing it, and if I can resolve it? Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress?

    – increasing the memory available to PHP?

Thanks Esmi, but there’s not a problem with viewing my actual blog…that’s fine, it’s when I log in to the admin page, which I would do to add a new post etc etc…it’s this page which is all wrong ??

Rebecca – esmi’s advice is sound – bad plugins can make your admin area go weird.

It may be that a plugin you installed recently does not get on too well with another plugin and this can cause problems both indoors and out.

Clearing the brower cache can also sort out certain problems too.

Thank you both for your help. I deleted all plugins which did’nt fix it, but then also re-installed wordpress, both in conjunction with eachother seemes to have fixed it! Thank you for helping me with this ??

I’ve been getting some weird comments, alot of spam comments, also I use a mac which has never had a virus, but on my iPad when I try and log in to the admin page a windows interface will appear and run a (fake) malware test…very strange, and a few months leading up to having the above problem, I noticed when creating a new post in the admin page, the visual view was behaving strangely, the text was like a mixture of plain text and html maybe, but the layout was ok…Just wondered if any of this could contribute/cause the problem I had?

    Thanks again to everyone ??

Glad the help was useful and that you seem to have sorted out your problems.

Sounds as if you might have installed a malware infested plugin – best to download them from WP itself. And watch out for free WordPress themes – some of them contain evil code which can mess up your WP installation badly. I know, this happened to me, and I have to go into the database to remove the nastiness. This is not for the faint-hearted.

And make sure you use good strong passwords and follow the detailed instructions for installing WP – and look at this info on WP security: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Hardening_WordPress

You might like the Login Lockdown plugin too.

Have fun, but play it secure!

I’m sure my current theme and plugins were from wordpress…although I have installed themes from outside wordpress which aren’t active, think I may delete all ones I’m not using to be on the safe side. Will check out that link, and also change my password.

Thanks again you have both been so much help ??
