help! blog hacked and database gone but posts still there?

Hi

I have taken over management of a wordpress blog, it has been hacked. So I read what I have to do and it says to re-install with latest version, so I set out to do that. However when going to back up database it appears empty, no tables within it. YIKES.. the person I have taken over the management from is not very available and I am not even sure if she has a backup. What is strange though is that if I go past the google warning and look at the site, all the posts are still there…. so that means they are stored somewhere??? any idea where I can find them… does this make any sense to anyone? I am new to wordpress.
