Help building a fast(er) website

Hi everyone,

Can anyone point me in the direction to create a fast performing website? Ive got a holding site at the moment Pixel Edge, the theme I will change its just experimental but its slow. I keep going round in circles.

Ive tried the base wordpress themes that ship (so ignore the current theme) as I know this forum doesnt support that.

My Question or confusion is all the themes that ship and third party themes ive tried all seem to be slow when i test my website speed on Google its not good. (i hardly have anything on it either!)

Are there steps, best practices to configure wordpress at its core or its base themes for the best performance?

Or do you think its my web hosting, im with heart internet and the other sites i have I struggle with too.

I want to adopt wordpress as my main development platform, but cant help but feel ive confused myself or am missing some basic best practices?

Ive tried some of the plugins that have various options for speed, although the minify seems to break most of the themes they dont seem to make a huge impact.

Hope you can help im starting to get a few too many sites im struggling with.
