Help making this work

  • I have been trying (and TRYING) to get the following functionality to my WP installation.

    GOALS————-
    A) 1 side bar and a couple of categories for unregistered visitors.
    B) Teaser plugin for unregistered users.
    C) Different sidebar and all categories for registered users.

    ———————
    Role Manager – which works well…and I am sure will be a part of my eventual solution.

    Disclose-secret – tried, but it does not work with the version of WP. even tried a couple of older versions of it, and can’t find one that goes back far enough.

    Any number of unsuccessful conditional statements.

    Variety of ideas found in the forums here…did not write them all down.

    Since a fair amount of the trouble seems to be with the older version of WP…

    CAN I use a more recent version or am I stuck with the one my host has installed?

    If I can, SHOULD I upgrade it? Which version should I use?

    If I can and I should…the next question is HOW do I upgrade?

    The site is not yet live, so no one but me can see it, and I don’t have a lot of old posts to safeguard.

    Here are the plugins that I intend to use…at least the ones I care about.

    Admin Drop Menus, Batch Categories, Countdown Timer, Challenge, Event Calendar, EmailShroud, FAQ, GetWeather, Hot Dates, Organizer, Post Teaser, Postie, Role Manager, Subscribe2, Subscribe me, Themed Login, WordPress Mobile Edition, List Manager, WP Admin Bar, Directory List, WordPress Database Backup
