I’m a total novice at doing any of this stuff. I am needing to move my blog over to a new server. The domain name is moving with it and I would be eternally greatful if someone could fix the mess I believe I’ve created. I don’t really understand how to restore the database for my blog. I’ve tried to follow the instructions posted in the documentation and I just can’t get it to work. Please help!

  • Which docs ?

    This covers moving:
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/move/
    as does
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/move2/

I see a working blog at your link above ?

    Sorry –

I wasn’t clear in my last post. The link is currently working because the DNS servers haven’t flipped over yet. They should in next few hours. The server i’m switching over to is:

    https://69.65.4.185/~mireles/

I know I didn’t restore the DB correctly because I didn’t know what I was doing on the new host. I was trying to follow the directions at both of the links you’ve posted but lost it at the restore step. Would you mind helping me get this sorted out?

    thanks!

    Certainly can ??

How far do you get, and what happens when it goes wrong ?

Bear in mind that until the DNS has switched, accessing the new blog could cause it to act very oddly.

Thanks again for the reply. Apparently my webhost manager panel has erroneous information. ip for my blog is not the same as my cpanel and just out of frustration i tried the ip for my cpanel and added the user and it seems to have worked. not really sure why:

    https://69.65.4.130/~mireles/

since it is a fresh install on this host do i still need to trash the cache folder contents? I’m still not certain that i installed all of this correctly. Again, thank you very much for your quick responses.

The cache file is of no real use unless you get lots of visitors. Lots = hundreds very very quickly.

Add this to your wp-config.php file:
    `define(‘DISABLE_CACHE’, true);
Put it just below the 4 lines which you completed with the connection info.
That’ll kill it off until you remove that line.
