Help please! I don’t understand how to change my theme

    Hi there,
    I am trying to change my theme from the standard wordpress 2.5 template I got when my site was setup (thanks to the Install4Free people!)

    I am trying to follow the instructions here:

    But am still confused as this doesn’t seem to explain things too well for non-techie people like me.

    I am using Dreamhost. Is that where I go to change my theme, and if so where and then what do I do? I have downloaded my chosen theme and the folder is on my desktop.

    If someone could please explain to me in the most simple language possible I would really appreciate it.

  • Extract the contents of the zip and upload the folder using a ftp client like FileZilla to your themes folder >> wp-content/themes

    After that you can select your theme from your dashboard by clicking ‘Design’ where you will see a list of available themes.

    Note: when uploading the theme to your site be careful not to nest the folders ie: wp-content/themes/yourtheme/yourtheme This seems to be a common mistake.

    Does Filezilla work on Macs? I am using Mac OS X version 10.4.11.
    If not are there any other free FTP clients I can use?

    Yes but then when I go to download it says this:

    Mac OS X

    FileZilla_3.0.9.1_i686-apple-darwin9.app.tar.bz2 (Intel)

    FileZilla_3.0.9.1_powerpc-apple-darwin9.app.tar.bz2 (PowerPC G4)

    Requires OS X 10.5 or newer

    I don’t understand if both of these require OS X 10.5, or just the 2nd one. And I don’t understand if I need Intel or PowerPC G4 either – how do I determine that?

    Also – any other free FTP or just Filezilla?

    Ask filezilla those questions, or use some common sense?

    This is the time to start “thinking”. You are going to find, if you havent already, that WP requires you to think. If googling something is tough, you have a very long road ahead of you.

    You really don’t have to be so rude. I thought this was a forum offering “help” – I don’t need the attitude along with it.

    im not being rude at all. I gave you very good advice, what you do with it is up to you.

    Rude would have been much different, trust me.

    And this is a support forum. For WordPress. Not for Filezilla. Not for Macintoshes. Not for OS-whatever.
