Help sought with theme please!

I have been haphazardly seeking a theme for many moons. The closest to what I would like is the presently installed Fifteen theme.

I like the way it previews posts when the cursor moves over them on the front page. Is there a name for this feature?

However, the greyness is a bit tacky and the menu at the top takes up far too much space before the posts appear.

Is it possible to have the posts appear in a grid form nearer the top of the screen?

Why are my menus repeated at the top and just below the title?

Is there one available like this but with that same preview effect I have in Fifteen? Paid or otherwise.
