Help! Theme update erased my developers custom menu??

    I had a developer create a custom sticky menu to replace the one that comes with the theme (this was a long, complicated task) and it seems that the recent theme update has erased his work! The menu is now back to the original theme menu- which does not function with my anchor links and is superimposed on the page after load, rather than scrolling with the page. What can I do, help please?!

    Dear @bonnieg77.
    When you change or add something to the core files of a theme it’s getting erased everytime this theme is updated. That happens with every theme.
    The only way to keep the changes is to create a child theme, using a Plugin and do these changes to the child theme which at the moment will be active. I could send you one, two Plugin suggestions to create the child theme and tell the developer to apply these changes to the child theme and the changes won’t be lost again.
    Also you can ask your hosting company if they have a backup before the today’s update and revert your website to a former state.
    However again you have to use a childbl theme to apply the custom code changes.

    Oh no, I had NO idea. I don’t think my developer works with Plugins, is it easy to create a child theme? I don’t know anything about this. I welcome your suggestions, thanks.

    Well you can use a Plugin to create a child theme or with no Plugin at all.
    One great Plugin is this one https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/child-theme-configurator/
    You just create the child theme, activate it and your Dev can add the changes to that theme not the parent one. Many WordPress developers know how to work with child themes.
    However if your are not sure ask the developer he will definately help you because for a developer is really easy to work with a child theme. Is like working with the parent theme but to a different folder.

    Does the child theme look exactly like the regular one? If we have a copy of the file he edited before can we copy it to the child theme? And any change we make to the child theme will override the parent theme when it updates? My developer is a friend who runs a company, not specifically a WordPress developer, so he has been really helpful and done a lot of work but outside of WordPress- all code. I don’t know any WordPress developers ??

    The child theme inherits all the functionality of the parent. Any new functionality that is added to the child theme extends the parent functions and is preserved even after updating the parent.
