I’m getting ready to upgrade to 2.0.4. from 2.0.2 and following the Codex instructions, I’m trying to back up all my data. To do that, as suggested, I successfully installed ‘wp-phpmyadmin’ but following the warning not to be hasty, I’d like some help on using it to back up my files.

I’m assuming after clicking all the boxes on the first page, I go to the Operations tab. If so:
A: Which buttons and boxes do I check there?
B: The CREATE DATABASE before copying box is already checked, do I uncheck it or not?
C: At the bottom of the page is an ERROR message that says: “The additional features for working with linked tables have been deactivated. To find out why click here.” Do I have to resolve that now, or can I finish the back up and do it later?
D: On the operations page, in the Copy database to box, do I type in the standard C\ hard drive path I want to use for my backup?
E: The Codex instructions say I have to back up all database tables and files, including .htaccess… but it isn’t listed under the table shown on the phpmyadmin check-off chart… do I have to back-up that file separately, with my FTP program? And if so, is it easier to back up everything that way, and forget about messing with phpmyadmin in the first place? Just make a complete backup of the ‘root’ directory at my dreamhost site? Or my ‘wordpress.com’ directory, with all the files in it?

  • If you’re upgrading from 2.02, you can go here: https://markjaquith.wordpress.com/2006/06/01/wordpress-203-upgrade-changed-files-zip-changes-diff-changed-files-list/ grab the files you need to upgrade to 2.03. (Read the directions) Once you’ve done that, you can then go here: https://markjaquith.wordpress.com/2006/07/30/wordpress-204-upgrade-changed-files-zip-changes-diff-changed-files-list/ and update to 2.04. (Again, read the directions)

I’m not sure if there is an easier way to go straight from 2.02 to 2.04 but I did it this way and it worked well for me.

Before doing anything, make a complete backup of your setup.

Thanks for the links, but I still need answers on how to back up, asked above.

    A couple of things, really.

One, I’m new to this support forum, but I’m either blind, or I don’t see a way to create a new post here. That’s why I’m responding to this one, as it’s the closest I can see to the issue I’m having.

Two, and this is why I’m writing: I just upgraded to WP 2.0.4, and RSS readers on my Mac and a friend’s WinXP machine aren’t picking up new posts (published after my update).

I tried re-subscribing on both platforms, and only post published before the update are showing up.

I’ve looked under admin>options>reading, but don’t see anything there that would cause posts to not show up in an RSS reader.

    Help please.

mazipani: scroll to the bottom of the index page. Choose a forum, click to enter. Scroll to the bottom of the page for a new topic entry screen.

Re the upgrading process: I just did a dozen blogs. They included 1.5.2, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, and 2.0.3 versions. I didn’t do anything but upload the new 2.0.4 files after making database backups. Everything went fine. No problems experienced at all.

    jayjerome,

Sorry, I didn’t read your initial post well enough. Here’s a link to the codex explaining how to backup your database: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Backing_Up_Your_Database – just read and follow the instructions and you’ll be fine. There are even a few images that should help you understand what needs to be done.

I’m not sure which codex page you looked at, but this did it for me and I’m not a database guru for sure. Hope this helps!
