Today wordpress failed to complete an update of the software and my entire website has dissapeared offline. I have spoken to my web hosting company who have talked me through the back up process but the problem remains, I have just tried a manual update but still the problem remains.

I am currently getting the following messages when you type in my domain https://www.choicedj.co.uk

Warning: require(/www/sites/519/238/www.choicedj.co.uk/web/wp-includes/load.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /www/sites/519/238/www.choicedj.co.uk/web/wp-settings.php on line 21

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/www/sites/519/238/www.choicedj.co.uk/web/wp-includes/load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear’) in /www/sites/519/238/www.choicedj.co.uk/web/wp-settings.php on line 21

Please can somebody from wordpress let me know what I can do to get my site back online as this is a very busy period of time for me taking bookings and my web presence could be affected and my business could suffer. The back up of data I have locally is a month old, so even when I get that back online i’ve lost a lot of hard work over the past month.

Absolutely tearing my hair out with stress atm ??

I cant even access my wp-admin page

Even if i have to start again then upload all the files, any help VERY VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks for your response, I have actually just deleted all the files from the remote site using filezilla. I now have nothing at all in the remote folder and was planning on uploading all the files from the last back up.

Should I do anything else before I do this ?

Nooo! You’ve just deleted all of your themes. plugins and uploaded images/attachment files! Ask your hosts if they can restore everything that you’ve just deleted.

I have already asked them to do that earlier, they are going to let me know in the morning what date they last took a back up.

I thought it would be ok to delete everything remotely as I had a back up locally ?

Clearly I havnt got a clue what im doing in this respect, its not easy when when your just self taught …I spent a year of my life creating this site and because of the failed update of the software its gone and im stressing now about my google presence. Isnt there a simple way to start again and re upload the files, I dont understand

I thought it would be ok to delete everything remotely as I had a back up locally

Do you have a copy of your wp-content folder? Or at the very least, your wp-content/uploads folder? What about your wp-config.php file or .htaccess file?

Isnt there a simple way to start again and re upload the files

Not without copies of those files & folders. They contain information & uploaded files that are specific to your site.

I have a copy of my wp-content folder which contains (plugins, themes, upgrade, uploads and a copy of a php file called called index

You also need a wp-config.php file and possibly an .htaccess file. The index.php file is of no use.

I have a copy of wp-config file, I don’t see an .htaccess file anywhere.

I have just spoken to my hosting company again and they have said that they have put in a request to their engineers to find out the last time they took a back up of the site before 4pm this afternoon. Apparantly they said it is likely it was done at midnight last night and whatever I have done should just be restored

Right now, I think it would be best to see if the site can be restored by your hosts. Then tackle the upgrade separately.

i’ve managed to restore it to the start of december by re-uploading everything, I have got an online presence at least, although i’ve lost a lot of blogging for a month and all the google analytics that i had done, plug ins, web changes etc since then.

Gonna wait till the morning and hopefully it will be fully restored.

WordPress has now auto updated after i accessed wp-admin. hopefully that wont cause a problem with uploading files from before that latest update.

Relieved …to say the least. Fingers crossed for the complete restore

Thank you for your help this evening ??

Glad to hear that your site is up again. ??

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to my fab web hosting company LCN for restoring my site to its original state following yesterdays temporary disaster.

It was certainly a tough lesson to learn …and the morale of the story is never ever refresh or leave the page when wordpress is updating its software.

Thanks to everyone on the various threads who offered advice and to LCN once again for superb customer service as always ??
