• I am not well-versed in WordPress, but I am beginning to educate myself. I have recently taken a position with an entertainment company, and one of my roles is website maintenance. I inherited this company website, and I have no documentation on any how-to’s. The person who built/installed this site is not easy to reach and even harder to get an answer from, so I feel like I just need to take the bull by the horns and learn how to edit this site without their help.

I have been able to navigate some of the basic fundamentals of editing a WordPress site (editing text, etc.), but I am having difficulty on their next request, which is to update one image from the homepage. When I go into the theme settings, this appears to be a custom theme, so there is no online customization documentation for me to reference. Most of the other website pages have been manageable, but this homepage is a challenge. I don’t know if this is a plugin or not. The pictures are static, but there is a bit of animation when the website is loaded. I will answer any questions you have to help me find the source and how to edit it. I looked at the media that has been uploaded, thinking that this just might be one large photoshopped image, but I don’t see it in the media files.

Any help you can provide, would be a tremendous help. Thanks in advance.

Well, this is as much a problem for us as it is for you: as this is a custom theme, we also have no clue what features it has and how to do what.

Looking at the HTML source code of the homepage, it seems much of the homepage was hard-coded. One clue is the homepage’s body class page-template-page-home-php

… which implies there’s a theme file named page-home.phpin the theme’s folder which controls what you see on the homepage.

But it’s impossible, without examining the content in this file, for me to say if everything you see on the homepage is hard-coded in this file, or if this file just contains PHP code that is dynamically fetching bits and pieces from the WordPress database.

So… I guess you can see where this is heading: yes, you’re going to have to get your hands dirty…. you’ll need to access the site’s files and examine this theme file!
