help with adsense please

my website is

how would i put adsense ads in the big empty spaces that i have on the sides of my page. i tried to put them in the sidebar but they just covered my menu. i think my theme is kinda not optimized for wordpress or whatever. i also tried pluging them manually into my sidebar.php but that didnt work either. any help or tuts would be awesome. thanks
