• New guy…started WP, um, yesterday.
When I try to make changes to index.php the button for saving changes sez:
you cannot update that file/template: must make it writable, e.g. CHMOD 766
I have no idea what this means. I do not speak php. Please assist.
    Many thanks.

  • Hmmmm.
I now have permissions on index.php, the folder it’s in, and the folder THAT folder is in. The permissions are 755 I believe. Still the submit button on WP’s template editing page says “you cannot update that file/template” etc.
So how exactly does one modify ones index page?

    You’ve tried a hard refresh ?
Have you installed everything into the one place, or have you done a two directory install ?

Yes, everything is orderly in the directory structure.
The message on the submit button is not a popup. It seems to be a permanent part of the template editing page.

Are you logged in as the admin or did you create a different user maybe?

No–there’s just regular old me. No other users.

I FINALLY managed to get the permissions on index.php changed. It is no 766 (but I can make whatever I want ha ha).
The problem seems to be not in my files but in the web page that WP uses to edit the templates.
    Any insights?

Well that just seems weird. But you could get around it by editing using notepad or something else.

Very odd……. it does seem like a browser / cache issue, but as I’ve yet to get my scanned Mac, I can’t confirm ??
    Glad it’s working though !

Since you folks are so patient and helpful, I’ll push my luck.
Say I create a page in some other venue (notepad, etc.) Can I just upload it to my cpanel and it will work (assuming it has the right code, extension, etc.)

As in a page for wordpress ?
Yes, it should do…….but I’ve not done that, so it’s one of those “At your own risk” type things.
You may want to edit ‘templates.php’ so that whatever it is can be reached by clicking instead of using the entry box.

    Thanks. I’ll keep working…………
