    Hi, there.
I need help to understand better the Yoast plugin. I know the SEO basics, but I get confused when the plugin tells me that the keyword was used previously. Since I work in a newsroom, I imagine every keyword will be repeated eventually.
For example, we wrote a piece entitled: “Autism may be related to ‘male behavior’, says research”. We wouldn’t use the suggestions (what is autism, autism symptoms or autism day) because it has nothing to do with our content. And, at the same time, if we use only autism it will appear the alert that we have already used this word.
    Any thoughts?

    Hello,

    Thanks for reaching out.

If you click on the ‘more than once’ anchor text link, what happens? It should open a new tab and show you a list of posts or pages where you’ve previously used that focus keyphrase. You can then make the necessary changes to ensure that those posts don’t have the same focus keyphrase and try to rank for the same search result or key phrase.

However, if you are unable to avoid this due to your kind of content, it’s fine. You can ignore the feedback. They are suggestions and not hard rules to follow.

Hi, Maybellyne. Thanks for your prompt reply. The plugin it’s working fine, you see. It shows me other times I used the keyword. But let me give an actual example of what is happening. We wrote a text and the reporter used as keyword “aliens Milky Way”. The text is about aliens conquering the Milky Way. If we use only the word aliens, it shows we already used it. On the other hand, if we use like he suggested it appears a problem with keyword distribution – even after I added synonyms on the plugin for aliens. I guess it’s because we didn’t use the keywords “aliens Milky Way” together anymore. Any thoughts?

    Hi @layseventura

You mentioned that you are using the synonyms feature. This is a Yoast SEO Premium feature. So if you have an active Yoast SEO Premium subscription, please do contact us directly for support – https://yoast.com/help/support/#premium

Otherwise, it sounds like the issue is you need to do more keyword research in order to avoid keyword cannibalization (by using the same focus keyword across several posts or pages). We have a guide here that should help you – https://yoast.com/keyword-research-ultimate-guide/

Thank you for your considerations, Michael Tina.

I guess part of the solution is what you’ve suggested: doing more keyword research. But ultimately it seems that the plugin was designed mainly for producing content other than news. It’s not a major issue, you see, we’re happy to be working with Yoast. In fact, if I can suggest something to improve in the plugin is that.

    All the best.

    Hi @layseventura

Thanks for your feedback. The Yoast content analysis is designed for you to write great content from an SEO and Readability standpoint. Good content is a very important factor when it comes to rankings and traffic in the search results. Of course, we understand if there are instances when the analysis might not always fit best with the type of content you are writing.

The point still stands that if you use a focus keyphrase on several posts or pages, it can lead to keyword cannibalization, as you’ll have several posts or pages trying to rank for the same search term, which is why we have that assessment in place, and why we advocate for keyword research, so you can ensure you have different keyphrases for different posts.

You can take these assessments from the plugin as more of a suggestion, rather than a strict guideline to follow. In fact, trying to achieve all green bullet points might even be detrimental to the content itself – https://yoast.com/want-green-bullet-wp-seo/

Best of luck in further optimizing your content and website!
