Help with large membership site

Hi. I’m fairly new at using WordPress, and I’m wondering if it’s robust enough to handle a very large project I am working on with a group of people.

We want to create 50 websites. Each of these websites will have 6 top-level category pages, and each top-level category page will have 3-6 subcategory pages. Each of these subpages will have a listing for 12 members, each of whom will also have their own page. So each website will have 216 – 432 members. That means that, with 50 sites there will be 10,800 – 21,600 members total. These member will also, from time to time, be writing short articles. They will not be blogging.

We want to automate the creation of all of these member pages (as well as the subcategory pages, I think) and the articles that the members write. The members’ pages and the articles that the write will need to be reviewed by a team member before they can go live.

So my question is, is this doable with WordPress? If so, some ideas as to what to do and where to start would be great!
