• My old host shut down unexpectedly and I was unable to export my blog properly, using the export tool. Luckily, I make a habit of FTPing my site files fairly regularly, but I’ve been unable to actually get my blog up and running on my new host with my old content (posts).

Is it possible to restore my blog on a new host using my old content if I didn’t do a proper export? If so, how do I do it?

    TIA!

  • With an export, you only really get the content. I’m not sure if you mean that you DO or that you DON’T have the full site (all files), but you probably need that too (unless there was no customization done).

    You can try this:

    1. Get a clean, new WordPress site running on your new host
    2. Copy the WP-CONTENT folder (that you FTP’d from your old host) to your new site
    3. Import your content

It’s fairly simplistic and there may be some extra steps involved, but that’s how I would do it.

Of course, if you don’t have good backups (or a good export), things will be somewhat trickier.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like that without the database, I won’t be able to restore. I’ve found all my entries on the Wayback Machine, though, so I can just copy and paste the posts and re-upload the photos.

Thanks so much for your help!

My apologies — when I wrote my first reply, I thought I read you were ABLE to export your blog. I see now you were NOT able. ??

Indeed, without an export file, database or other type of backup, you’ll be stuck doing a copy/paste.

Shawnette have you tried using duplicator or backup buddy to backup and or clone your site for future disaster recovery options?
