    Hello,

First of all i love this plugin, I’ve been using it for years and it just works. Even in it’s free versions it’s very powerful.

I am updating a clients website and as is per normal I always do a backup however for some reason they are no longer completing. The last successful one was August 26th.

I have uploaded the log here: https://pastebin.com/QXrRjuX8

I have reduced the chunking to 50MB from the default 400 but it still constantly resumes. It seems to backup around 1000 files (out of around 14400) and just stops with no real error in the logs that I can see.

Edit to add: I installed WP Crontrol incase the corn jobs were broken but everything looks OK. There are some warnings but nothing related to updraft. Infact there is *nothing* related to the plugin but I don’t schedule backups.

    Support is very much welcomed.

    Thanks,

    David.

    Hi David,

Can you reduce the split archive size further down to 25mb? Also, avoid running multiple backups in a day as your host/server might be running low on resources.

    Thanks,

Thanks for getting back to me Bryle – appreciated.

I’ve reduced to 25mb and attempting a new backup now. Will update later.

I think this might be a server issue. When I launch the backups it seems to immediately max out some resources as per screenshot:

    Hi, @bcrodua – an update.

The backups again started but quickly entered a seemingly infinite retry loop and just keeps adding time.

I have investigated the host and something must have changed in the app as part of an update or something?

I opened a ticket and the hosting product has been the same since forever. So even when running at 400mb chunks the backups were completed within 5 mins but now it is maxing out I/O throughput and physical memory that is assigned to the account.

We have made changes to max_execution_time and memory_limit within the PHP config and I will try the backup again in a few hours but can you think of any updates that might have caused this? I really like the product as it’s nice and simple to use but I can’t run the site without backups for much longer.

I have created manual backups of the complete hosting package that includes the webserver config etc. but restoring that takes a little more time and effort.

    Thanks,

    David.

    Hi David,

Restoration process can stall/halt depending upon the total backup size and available server configuration, PHP timeouts can stall/halt the restoration process.

If you are trying to restore all backup sets at once, instead I suggest you to restore each backup set one by one i.e. First restore Plugins > Themes > Uploads > Others and at the end restore the database.

Let us know if above method helps to fix the issue.

    Thanks,
    Bryle

Hi, thanks but to be clear i’m not trying to restore anything. I’m simply trying to back the site up.

This worked perfectly well as of 26th August but has not been able to complete a backup since.

    The plot thickens…

I looked back at some earlier logs and my previous report of a successful backup in August was incorrect.

    Please see log file: https://pastebin.com/EQj6VRDg

Is there anymore, much more detailed troubleshooting we can do here?

Right. I’ve fixed this myself. I checked the logs and saw that Updraft couldn’t use it’s preferred zip extension (php-zip). It wasn’t enabled on m server, but it never has been.

I added this, removed all of the previous log and tmp files and cleared /wp-content/updraft/ folder of all but essential files.

Wiped the Updraft settings and reduced the set sizes to 25mb.

Server resources were still high at ~91% during it’s peak but the back completed in less than 5 minutes with no errors. I’m not sure if I have confidence in a restoration process though so will test that on another server.

I’d love to thank you for your support but to be honest I had to sort it myself, which I did by analysing the logs created by Updraft itself. Perhaps paid support is better.

    D.
