help with slugs

I have several categories that I have added a slug to. For example I created a category for a game site called pinballs. I gave it the slug of pinballs and tried too set my nav link to pinballs and I get a error 404 when I click on the nav button for pinballs. So how do you set the url friendly link if the slug doesn’t work?
