I have several images all sized at 597x331px. For some reason only one gets cut to 597x270px when uploaded. If I use it as a featured image, the thumbnail is the wrong size. I tried the force regenerate thumbnails plug in and 597×270 is created for that one image.
The correct featured image urls are ……/image3.jpg, the incorrect one is …../image4_597x270.jpg.
What is controlling that resizing? Media settings are the default 150×150,300×300 etc.
    Theme is i-transform.

What’s even more bizarre is the miscreant image is getting uploaded to the 03 (March) directory, but should be in the 04 directory?????

The only thing I see different is WP3.9 adds this new image size 597×270 – the other images (uploaded on 3.8.1) don’t have that. And the theme is using the full size image if there’s no 597×270 thumbnail. It makes no sense to me, but that’s what’s happening. There’s apparently no way to control this mystery thumbnail size….

It turned out to be a theme thing – I tried uploading again under the 2014 theme and no 597×270 image was created. So I can only guess the original images were uploaded under a different theme.
