help with width adjustment

I am trying to create a slideshow for an artist client who has most of their work in portrait layout and not landscape. I need the slideshow to fit on the screen height wise and for the width to adjust instead of the height. Right now the images are being squashed vertically. Is there a way to do this?

Also, is there a way to make the caption/text/navigation be under the picture instead of on top of them?
