• I’ve read through the instructions in the doc’s for moving WordPress to a subdirectory and having the blog/index.php in the root. It mostly makes sense but I have a few questions.

I originally installed my wordpress installation to a subdirectory of my website (/wordpress) and the entire WordPress site is running perfectly there. Now that I’ve got it just about ready to go “public” with, I want to replace my existing non-wordpress website (which is in the root) with just the blog portion of my WordPress site (index.php) and leave everything else in the subdirectory. I think in theory this would be easier because I wouldn’t have to change anything in my header or other files except the links to my home page… yes?

How do I accomplish this? Do I just copy over the index.php file and the Header file and adjust the links in the admin options panel to reflect that now the index.php is in the root, rather then the subdirectory /wordpress?

Is there anything else I need to consider or am missing? I feel like I’m doing this backwards from the instructions so I need some input from someone who knows WordPress much better then I do. Thanks in advance!

  • You mentioned that you’ve looked at the docs, did you see Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory?

I think it lays out what you’re looking for (?).

Yes, that is what I read but what I don’t understand is that since all my files are already in the subdirectory, do I need to change anything other then copying over the index.php file and the Options. I’m assuming all of the URL’s will be correct because I’m not moving anything else? Do I need to move the header.php over to the root also? What exactly is the Core files that it mentions?

    Thanks,

Well, you’re going in a kind of backwards manner compared to the article, but it seems like you could muddle through.

    Looking at the steps:

1 – skip, your files are where you want them

    2 – do

3 – skip (yours should already be set)

    4 – do

    5 – do

6 – skip, yours are already there

    7 – 11: do

I’m assuming all of the URL’s will be correct because I’m not moving anything else?

Which URLS? Any fully qualified links to the current location (in the sub-dir) will need to be adjusted to remove the sub-directory name of course.

What exactly is the Core files that it mentions?

    WordPress files.
