• Hi, I have been trying to use the WordPress to SMF [Simple Machines Forum] bridge plugin but there appears to be an error in it that I can’t resolve and the developer isn’t responding to comments.

    Here’s the problem:

When I create a new user in WordPress, a new user gets created in SMF, but it isn’t the same user.

An example: I register on WordPress as:

    User: TEST
    Pw: abc

I can log into WordPress okay, but when I go to SMF it says “That username does not exist.”

When I look in the SMF database it has a new user but the new user is:

    User: admin

I didn’t already have an admin user in the SMF database.

If I delete the user from WordPress then the “admin” user dissappears. If I try and log in with “admin” and pw: abc it does not work.

“admin” in this case is the first user registered in WP. So what appears to be the problem is that the plugin is bridging the first WP user rather than the last [or latest] user.

Any help would be greatly appreciated – I am willing to pay someone to fix it and I have a test enviroment set up if that makes debugging easier.

    Thanks,

    Jon

  • Hey,

I have fixed this and you won’t have to pay me.

    The updated package is here:

    https://www.earthorbit.com/opensource/WP_SMF_1.01.rar

    Your problem should be solved.

    Here is what was happening:

The older 1.0 version was registering whoever was logged in, rather the username entered. So, when admin (who is logged in) registered someone, it registered admin.

This new version fixes this problem. I suspect it will solve many of the other problems people are having with WP_SMF as well.

Please do let me know how it goes…if there are further login problems, I think I can address them. But this version should fix most problems, including the one you have.

I’ve now taken it a step further and added an Admin panel, among other things.

    Should be a simpler installation.

    New version available at
    https://www.earthorbit.com/opensource

I will work on expanding the features and options.

I can’t even use SMF forum, when I go to my plugin section and activate the SMF plugin my hole dashboard goes white, it’s really annoying because I would like to use it.

And by the way, when I click on your updated file to download it, it says page can’t load.

    Hello Terpsblog,

When I visit your site, I see that you use InvisionBoard. That requires an entirely different bridge. This bridge is for SMF forum, not any other. So, first of all, do you have SMF Forum Installed?

Also, what kind of wordpress are you running? If you’re running WPMU, or an older version of wordpress, there are ways you can end up with a white screen. I can’t tell what you have, because you’ve removed the wordpress copywrite (please don’t do this).

Finally, Mittineague had a suggestion for your problem here:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/116082?replies=7

I can’t help you with your download…all the links are active and my stats show many others have already downloaded. So that may be between you and you ISP, or maybe my host was temporarily down.

Please let me know if any of this helps. There is always a way to fix it.

I tryed using SMF many times, but it kept giving me the white screen after activasion. For invision free I just made that off their host and made it a redirct from the button. But my blog is 2.1.2, I tryed everything to get SMF not to make my admin page go white, some reason it keeps doing it..

    Hello Terpsblog,

I must apologize, my site really was down, at least the downloading portion of it ??

The problem has been fixed, and you should be able to get Version 1.02 at https://www.earthorbit.com/opensource.

So you know, the most common reason for getting a blank screen when installing a plugin a directory issue.

You need to install the entire plugin folder, not just the files.

So the directory should look like this:

    yourdomain.com/../wp-content/plugins/WP_SMF/(files go here)

This is a bit of a hunch, on my part. Let me know if it works.

    cheers

    p.s.
If you still have downloading troubles, DMRY’s site (https://www.dmry.net/wordpress-smf-bridge-plugin-10/ has included the version 1.01 I wrote as well)

    Hello Terpsblog,

I’ve just realized that you’re having this problem several different plugins.

This should not be the case. This would suggest that you have something very unique going on with your setup.

    Here are some questions:

What version of PHP does your server use?

What are the permissions on the plugins you download? Try 755 for the moment.

Do you install all the files? WP_SMF, for example, requires 4 different files in the WP_SMF directory to run (not including Settings.php). Do you have them all there?

I am not shore where I find what php is being used.
I am not shore where I find the permissions at.
Yes, I install all the folders.

Its weird because I am using 21 plugins that work fine, but the forums, newsletters, wp-poll and some other plugins make my screen white.

I hope you can help me find the problem, because I really would like to use some of them plugins. ??

    Wow…!

    21 plugins as a lot…plugins can conflict.

Before the php, here is an easy starting point:

Deactivate ALL the plugins (don’t worry, you won’t lose any info)

Install WP_SMF, and activate only this plugin.

Let me know how it goes…it might just work, and we can take it from there.

    It worked!
At the top of my admin pannel it says
“You still need to configure your WP_SMF Bridge. You can do this at Plugins->SMF”
So when I go their and add WP_SMF to the blank spot, nothing happens.

    Congratulations!

    The rest is just details.

So, one of your plugins conflicts. It will probably just be one out of your 21 plugins, so you just need to try different combinations and then find out which plugin doesn’t play nice.

As for your plugin, it is a bridge, it is not the forum itself. You need to install SimpleMachines Forum (considered the best free Forum software going).

If you don’t have Simple Machines Forum installed, you can get it here:

    https://www.simplemachines.org/download/

Make a directory to install it into, like “forums”.

The directory you keep it in, THAT is the one you need to enter into the plugin.

So, you still have work ahead of you:

    1. Find the bad plugin

    2. Install Simple Machines Forum

    3. Enter the folder into WP_SMF admin panel.

    THEN, you’ll be done ??

    By the way,

If this too much work, you can always use that RS_Discuss plugin.

It contains the forum software within itself, I believe.

But you’ll still have to find your BAD plugin.

Personally, I think SMF is much better, and worth the time.

Thank you for the help ??

    Glad to!

Good luck..I’ll check back now and again.
