• Hi, I have been trying to use the WordPress to SMF [Simple Machines Forum] bridge plugin but there appears to be an error in it that I can’t resolve and the developer isn’t responding to comments.

    Here’s the problem:

When I create a new user in WordPress, a new user gets created in SMF, but it isn’t the same user.

An example: I register on WordPress as:

    User: TEST
    Pw: abc

I can log into WordPress okay, but when I go to SMF it says “That username does not exist.”

When I look in the SMF database it has a new user but the new user is:

    User: admin

I didn’t already have an admin user in the SMF database.

If I delete the user from WordPress then the “admin” user dissappears. If I try and log in with “admin” and pw: abc it does not work.

“admin” in this case is the first user registered in WP. So what appears to be the problem is that the plugin is bridging the first WP user rather than the last [or latest] user.

    ====================================

    Link to SMF:

    Link to plugin:

Any help would be greatly appreciated – I am willing to pay someone to fix it and I have a test enviroment set up if that makes debugging easier.

    Thanks,

    Jon

  • Works great for me!

    Question for jjgallow:

Is there a way (or upcoming version) that allows the user to register on the forums, and be entered into the WP database? (Or at least for the time being, since i’m a SMF n00b, where do i edit the register link to just direct it to the WP logon page?)

    Hello daveklassix,

Some have succeeded in editing these register links quite nicely, and it is described here:

    https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=161671.0

However, version 1.06 will eliminate the need for this. It will enable SMF to update wordpress in the background. I am almost done!

HELP! I make no claims to be anywhere near as intelligent as the rest of you. I am just trying to fulfil a client’s wishes of integrating their SMF into their WP website. I have done the download of the “bridge” – unzipped it and ftp’d it into the “proper” places – I thought – it appears under plugins and allows me to press “activate” – but I get this message: “SMF Settings.php file can’t find. Please copy Settings.php file to under WP_SMF folder to SMF directory.” SOMEONE PLEASE tell this person with no left brain what this means???? PLEASE??? (Note: I have copied the settings.php from SMF and placed it in the WP_SMF folder. Not right?)

    Hello klafrance,

If it’s for a client, you’ve got your work cut out for you, as this bridge is somewhere between experimental and half-stable.

What you’ve done is right, however I believe you are using a very old version of that bridge. Even if you do everything right, it still may not work for you.

I have written newer versions, the latest being 1.05. You can get it here:

    https://www.earthorbit.com/opensource

However, since this is for a client, please understand what this is….progressive hacking. I make you no promises!

In this latest plugin version, there is a Readme file, an Admin Panel in WordPress, and no need to copy any settings files. You only have to enter the path to SMF via the admin panel.

    Good luck!

Hi – sorry I’ve been MIA – I finally gave up. The client said they knew someone who could “write code” and I turned it over to them. Supposedly, the links I was able to install “disappeared” after a few days?? uh, riiiigghhht… So I never solved this dilemma and I think the other person told them to take a different route. Thanks anyway. WordPress is one complicated little monkey. You are all geniuses who can do this stuff on a regular basis. Thanks! Kate

Thanks for getting back and calling us all geniuses Kate ??

I always welcome ego boosts, but I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you.

If you run into the situation in the future, the current bridge is beginning to be quite stable.

    cheers

I have everything working great now and was wondering if there is some code to display SMF on a page from within WordPress? I see the other code listings for latest posts, forums etc.

Thank you for your hard work.

    Hello bryandjo,

I am hoping to automate this feature soon. For the moment, you can do it with the IFRAME command, and there is documentation available for this in the SMF forum. I am not overly familiar with the feature myself, so I will not elaborate.

    cheers
