• I am using the WordPress theme Twenty Fourteen. I have a number of pages on my site which I only wish to make accessible via hyperlinks from other pages on my site. If I choose to publish a page, the title of this page appears on all of my site pages. Having many titles scattered about is extremely untidy. In order to address this problem in the short-term, I included all hyperlinked pages under a common parent page. The above theme manages my parent pages by presenting them on each page of the site as a drop down menu. I therefore now have the appearance of a drop-down menu containing as items the titles of all the hyperlinked pages on my site. This solution to eliminating the titles of hyperlinked pages is sub-optimal. I would prefer that the titles of published pages did not automatically appear on my site pages. Deleting the above drop-down menu from the list of menu items under ‘Menus’ in the Appearance section of my dashboard makes no difference. The parent pages are still published in appearance as drop-down menus. How can I hide the titles of my published hyperlinked pages more effectively? Any ideas?

  • Check that your menus are not automatically including published pages. You should be able to remove pages from your menu

The titles of my published pages do indeed appear on my site pages as though they are menu items or, if these pages are parent pages, as the titles of drop-down menus containing the child pages. However, as illustrated in my previous message, deleting the corresponding items from the menu area of Appearance section of my dashboard does not remove these items from the site pages. They still have the appearance of menu items or titles of drop-down menus, respectively. This is why I am seeking advice.

This is a courtesy message to report that with a little flash of inspiration, I have solved the above problem without having to change the theme. With this particular theme, I have discovered that it is possible to create a customized menu to overwrite the pseudo menus created by pages been published with the appearance of menus. As soon as this menu is activated, the previously published pages in the corresponding menu space are overwritten. I hope that this simple solution will be of assistance to anyone who encounters a similar problem specifically with the theme Twenty Fourteen.
