Hiding specific meta fields based on roles

Hi, I want to selectively display meta data in user profiles based on roles. I can do this with core user data by adding a filter user_contactmethods and do the role check there. Problem is that meta fields are not passed to $contactmethods, parameter of user_contactmethods, so I cannot filter them. Any idea? Thx.
