I put this problem up about 5 days ago and was told the problem was theme related, I contacted the theme who said it was not theme related, I changed the theme on my site and the same problem appears on other themes.—– this was the problem, ( I tried to mark the original ticket as unresolved but it does not work ).

I have an admin whose username is one name lets say Joe and the display name publicly is something else lets say fred.

When I create a post if you hover over the author it shows joe, I think this defeats the point of having a public name.

Is there any way I can make wordpress do what it says and make it show the public name.

If you mean the link (bottom left corner) then, no, it shows a link to the user’s list of posts (i.e., the author page), which requires using the user id.

Yes I mean the bottom left corner, so what is the point of having a nickname and display name, if everyone can see the username ?

Because that link is obscure and not usually noticed by users, I guess. The display name is spelled out in the post meta, usually more noticeable

I have had the website for several years, I get notified if someone tried to login without the right password or username and they get blocked. I have just started getting notifed that they are using my real admin username and it is only since I put a post on a month ago. It seems to me the posts should be listed under the displayname.

If you’d like to “make an issue” of this, please post a ticket at core.trac.www.ads-software.com so the core devs can respond. Note, however, that no one at WP regards a userid as something that needs to be hidden.

Your original topic is here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/hiding-username-2/

I think you’re not concerned with the userid but with the fact that the link takes you to the author’s page. As I said, the fact that this is linked is the responsibility of the theme; you could switch it off there in any case. Alternatively, you can also do without the author pages completely, you can also switch them off. This can be done with most SEO plugins (like Yoast and Rank Math) or this plugin here: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/disable-author-archives/

Depending on how the theme integrates the link in the posts, either the user name would remain there but would not be linked, or no author would be named at all. Depending on what you want to display in the post, you would have to clarify this with theme support (technically everything would be possible in any case).

By the way, there are no tickets here in the forum, only topics.

Thank you, my concern was that it opened my site to more targeted attacks if they knew the real username.

I have opened a whatever at core.trac.www.ads-software.com as I think I am not the only one that should be worried about this issue.

I have installed disable author archives which does hide it but I am aware of the need to not rely on too many plugins.

    Thanks again for your help.
