• I have a site on a shared host. I have few visitors. Almost daily I notice times when my site is down err 500. I check that I used 100% CPU and/or RAM at these times. The site dies for 10-15min then returns to normal. Host won’t give me any logs, so I can’t say if it’s the same times.

Since there aren’t that many visitors, the possible plugins responsible are WordPress Backup to Dropbox or Better WP Security. Today WordPress Backup to Dropbox failed and wasn’t backing up and I still had the 100% CPU and downtime.

My host keeps saying optimize something, of course without any other info. They said I should disable wp_cron. I searched and the best info link was
    https://wp.tutsplus.com/articles/insights-into-wp-cron-an-introduction-to-scheduling-tasks-in-wordpress/
It doesn’t sound like I should disable wp_cron.

  • do you know that it is definately your site that’s causing the server load?

If you’re on a shared hosting server then it could be any of the other sites that’s also hosted there that’s causing the problem, not just yours. If your host won’t show you any logs, then I’d be suspicious about it being your site.

The host tells me the load shown refers to my allotted limits only, and that I’m being throttled as I used all the CPU for my site. Usually the load shows 0% when I’m browsing my own site, so yes I’m confused what can take it all the way up

Unless you can see the server logs there’s really no way to say what is happening. It could be anything at all. They may have told you to disable wp_cron, but I’d ask them to give me some proof as to that being the culprit.

Having said that, if they can’t tell you waht is causing this, and won’t show you log file entries so you can debug it yourself, then it may be time to look for a new hosting company that will work with you if something like this happens (don’t ask for hosting recommendations on here though, it gets threads shut down thanks to too many people SPAM’ing their own hosting services).
