Hit counter plugin with PHP update compatibility

I have been using the hit counter plugin Hit Counter Max for several years. However, it does not allow PHP updates and I am stuck with version 5.6 of PHP. The plugin is easy to use and reliable. However, I cannot accommodate the above shortcoming in the longer term. (I have already sought a reply from the author.)

I would be grateful for recommendations on choice of an alternative low-maintenance free hit counter plugin that does not have the above limitation, which can also cope with WordPress version updates and which would allow me to start my hits count from the existing count rather than from zero.
