    Hi

I’m a little worried. The hits I’m getting on my website are increasing, which would normally be a good thing, but there’s something wrong with this and I’m wondering if one of you could tell me what it is and what I can do about it. These are the numbers:

    Day/Visitors/Visits
    Today: 24/2,746
    Yesterday: 37/47

    See what I mean? :/

    Thank you for your help.

These are the numbers since I posted here…
    25 3,208
    25 3,236
    25 3,293
I’ve taken my site down until I know what is going on.

It probably means your getting hit my a brute force attack, it happens quite a bit on the net.

    Hi Greg
    thank you for your reply.
I thought it was something like this and checked cPanel. What is the purpose of these attacks?

Unknown robot (identified by empty user agent string) 1,970 9.70 MB 04 Nov 2014 – 12:12
    Unknown robot (identified by ‘bot*’) 84 3.04 MB 04 Nov 2014 – 10:25
    Googlebot 74 4.15 MB 04 Nov 2014 – 10:52
    Unknown robot (identified by ‘spider’) 17 489.06 KB 04 Nov 2014 – 11:56
    * Robots shown here gave hits or traffic “not viewed” by visitors, so they are not included in other charts.

You won’t know until it is too late ??

In general they’re trying to get access to your site to distribute malware through it. Either by infecting your visitors or just using your raw storage and bandwidth to continue the attack on other sites.

    Hi Greg
Thank you. Is there anything I can do about this?

Not really, no. You can let your hosting provider know what IP address they’re coming from and they may be able to block it.

You’ll probably see this kind of attack every couple of weeks if your site is on the internet, they usually give up after a few hours once they don’t find an attack vector to use.

I’ve just blocked 3 IPs and it has stopped. I’ll see what happens and contact my provider if need be. Thanks a lot for your help. ??
