Hitting Too many process limit and getting 500 error on HostGator

    I’m using HostGator Baby package and currently I have about 4 WordPress sites hosted there. Among them, only two receive traffic but not that much. One of them get about 1,00,000 (less than a million) impressions per month and another receive about 10,000 impressions per month. I don’t think that’s too much that my sites should go down because of hitting process limit.

    You know HostGator has this 25 concurrent process limit, and since a couple of weeks I’m frequently hitting the limit as my site goes offline with a 500 Internal error report. I’ve checked with the support and they asked me to cache my site. So, I installed W3 Total Cache and now using CloudFlare. The site has become faster but the process limit problem is still taking place.

    I guess many people do host their sites with HostGator that receive way too much traffic compared to my simple websites. For your information, here goes my sites and the most recent error logs:

    I’m not using too many plugins, just a few ones. However, I use https://mysqldumper.net/ to create automated backups of database. Could this be the problem?

    How can I resolve the situation?

    I was getting internal 500 errors recently and hitting the process limit with less than 2,000 visits a day.

    After looking at my processes I noticed mac mail was constantly running. A Hostgator rep told me a lot of times mac mail will check for mail and never disconnect.

    So, I disconnected my mac mail from my computer and have not had an internal 500 error since.

    We just ran into a similar error on Host Gator with our Apple Mail account being open and causing the internal server 500 error.

    After us both quitting Apple Mail, which has domain email from two of our hosted sites, the sites were back up, and running, without any more glitches or hitches.

    Very lame. Looking forward to figuring out how to fix this.

    The reality is that most cheap / shared web hosting providers have strict restrictions on how many resources each account can use. How else would they make a profit? If you are hitting these limitations simply upgrade to a VPS or, in some cases, get your own dedicated server.

    There is also a LOT you can do to optimize your server/VPS with root level access. It seems like the original poster has resolved his problem so I am going to close this thread.
