If I sticky a post then the featured list empties.

The featured lists on the right are all sticky posts with the latest one excluded ( the latest one is used as the latest feature on the left which shows featured image ).

If you want to change this behavior, you have to override index.php changing the queries.

as pulling the image from the post makes the image the wrong size.

Looks like it’s because of theme uses its own JS to position the image.
