I have taken over maintenance of a web site and am new to WordPress, perhaps I’ve broken something without realizing.
The menu in the header of my home page looks OK, hover the mouse and the links look correct, but clicking on them results in a black page with a white “X” in the top right.
But if I right-click the link and open in a new tab, it takes me to the correct page.
    WordPress 5.6 running Talon theme.
Web Site viewed in Firefox and Chrome.
I’ve followed the instructions to update the Talon theme and a number of plugins.
If I start changing theme and deactivating plugins, will I end up losing content that I later will need to recreate? (I didn’t realize that there was, apparently, no backup)

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi,

As checked with my test site, I can’t replicate the same issue.

Perhaps it happens on a site which has script conflict with other plugins or third-party scripts. To verify this, can you try disabling all plugins temporarily and run your test in each?

Before doing so, I’d recommend you enable troubleshooting mode with the help of this plugin. So only the logged-in site’s administrators will be experiencing the troubleshooting mode.

    Thanks so much Kharis.

You were absolutely correct, I had a troublesome plugin.

The troubleshooter you recommended wasn’t much help, enabling troubleshooting mode switched my theme and I couldn’t get back to the original theme without disabling troubleshooting mode.

But after installing a backup plugin, doing a backup (which was easy) I worked down the list of plugins until I found the culprit.

Now I feel much better about my (reluctant) role as web site admin.

    Thanks again,
    Gideon

    Hi Gideon,

Glad you were able to resolve your issue!

I’m having the same problem on my website and am also a bit of a newcomer to WordPress. All my themes and plugins are up to date.

I’m hopeful that the same fix will work for me. Could you please tell me which backup plugin you used? And, which plugin was troublesome for you?

    Thanks so much,
    Laura

    Hi Laura,

I used UpdraftPlus for my backup. Backed up into a Google Drive (when Google came back online!!) I haven’t tested the backup by reinstating a backup, just taking it on faith that it would work. 3 Million sites …..

The troublesome plugin was “Responsive Lightbox & Gallery”.

I disabled them all (and I think that the original creator had some installed that are not being used), then went back one at a time activating them. That one was the culprit.

But after updating it, all was OK.

    Good luck and stay safe.

    Gideon

    Hi Gideon,

Thanks for the information; much appreciated!

All the best and stay safe.

    Hi Gideon and Kharis,

May I know what step did you do to solve this problem? I have the same issue about ” clicking on them results in a black page with a white “X” in the top right”.

Looking forward to hearing from you

    Hi @mzin,

Are you seeking for help with the mobile menu button? It would be better if you can share a screen recording to directly point me the issue, share it to file hosting services like Google Drive, and link it here as you reply.

    Kharis

    Hi all,

My problem with this issue is my theme version. Because I try another theme and my site worked fine. Maybe this step will help others.

    Thank you

Thanks for getting back. I do not have a video capture, but I took two screen shots and you can see what happens when I click a menu link. The only change we have made recently is adding a SSL certificate.

One of my websites is also experiencing this error and I stumped. I updated all plugins. deactivated all plugins and the problem wont go away.
