Home widgets not appearing

I just can’t get the Home Page widgets to display. I understand they must use the default template but I have set this and still they don’t appear. What happens if the default template is full width ie no sidebar? Although I have temporarily changed this to be content and sidebar just in case but they still don’t appear! Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
