Homepage Loading But No Other Links/Pages 404

    I’ve been having problems for ages with my site not loading so much so that i gave up and left it. It’s been totally white page blank for months. Not knowing what to do i’ve been asking the host but not getting much help from him but he said he thought it was PHP related and would try fix it but hasn’t seen a result as yet.

    Today i decided i was going do something about it. Thinking that it might be the plugins and finally even getting a login from my host to the servers (which i didn’t have for months). I changed the plugin folder name to plugin_2 and tried to load the site. It worked and the front page loaded not thinking to try any other links now. OK good then i renamed it back to plugin as it should be and started renaming a few of the plugins inside the plugins folder with _2 at the end the site loaded again. Good so i was able to then get into the admin and i upgraded to WP 4 and upgraded all the plugins and before this changed the _2 back to the proper names of the 10 or so plugins (it wasn’t all of them that i changed with _2).

    All good every things upgraded. Thinking everything was cool. This is when i discovered… I noticed no blog posts or pages would load. This is odd and this is where i’m stuck. What do you suggest to try next.

    What is happening is ONLY the front homepage of my blog is loading and every other link in any menu or blog post or page will not load and brings up a page 404 error as below here:

    Not Found

    The requested URL /blog/blog/2010/first-house-reno/ was not found on this server.

    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    At the moment i have got every plugin deactivated but Akismet. The home page loads and every link clicked brings a 404 white page. Page does not load.

    Any suggestions at all i could try next would be most appreciated!? Or what could have happened could there have been some sort of bug/virus on the server changing PHP or some crazy thing, i don’t understand all this well??

    Found in the blog admin > themes this:

    blog-directory Edit | Delete Broken Theme: Stylesheet is missing.

    Then i go into the the blog admin theme iNove style.css and it loads a blank white page with no code at all. mmmm i think it’s not on the server.

    But i went on the server and the style.css will load into the editor? So the style.css is on the server but it does not load in the blog admin iNove theme editor.

    Maybe this is the problem. But it must be what loads the style.css that doesn’t not load it properly? Again, still lost any suggestions or where to look would be great??

    Well you would not believe the research i did on this one to try and resolve by myself.

    But just to post an update for anyone else that might come across my problem and be looking for a possible answer to your own problem. Today i was messing about with the permalinks back to default and everything was fine but still no custom links working.

    Cut it short: i noticed that the htaccess file on the server did not have a (dot) .htaccess (instead it had just this: htaccess i changed it to a .htaccess and the whole sites links worked and loaded again. I can’t see the htaccess file on the server now so I’m not sure where it went to after i changed it to .htaccess but the site has started working!

    I don’t know how on earth this happened on the server but site was down some four months trying to figure it out and it was only one dot!
