Host Name

Just tried to install this plugin and it doesnt accept my host name in ftp section. I host with 1and1 and they say to use your web url as the host, and I cant find any other info from them to find out an alternative.

But is entering in ftp details for a plugin a tad unsecure ?

Anyway as it did not accept my host name, i tried manual install, and it does not appear on plugin page.

I tried updating my wordpress and a few other plugins but everytime i go to update I get this ftp screen even though there are no auto post files in my plugins folder.

Please help -I cant believe after working many many hours to get my site finished, the whole site is now compromised by this plugin.

It sounds a very good plugin and I want to use but please tell me why ftp details are necessary on installalion, as this does not seem very secure to be giving out this info, and secondly please advise either a host name alternative, or a way to get rid of your ftp screen, as I cant update wordpress or any other plugins now.
