Suddenly one of sites is behaving erratically. Initially I got this database connection error. Then I have it fixed by creating a new user and have it saved into the database. And I have also went to update the details in wp-config.php.

Now either I totally cannot access the admin log in page or if I managed to log in, as I clicked further, I got the same error remark. As for the site, again is the same problem. Either I could see it or I got a blank page with the error message. If I could access the site, as I clicked further, it still led to the error page.

I have wrote to the host server. They replied with some suggestions, but of not much help. Then they totally stopped replying my mail.

Could someone enlighten me. Is it some technical faults over my side or is the host’s database is down?

  • Without knowing the exact error you got, or what your host suggested, as well as what you have tried, it’s doubtful we’ll be able to give you useful information. After all, “behaving erratically” covers a lot of territory.

If it’s intermittent (happening sometimes but not all the time) it’s a server issue. I’ve seen this before, and it’s always been that either the web server or the database server is down or can’t connect to each other. Most times that’s bene due to the server/servers being under-powered and not able to handle the load. This is something that only your hosting company can help with.

    The erratic problems are:
    – at times totally cannot access the admin login page.
    – if can log into my admin page, I cannot click further. It shows the error message.
    – cannot see my site on the browser.
    – if I can see it, the site cannot download completely.
    – and when I click on most of the links on my site, it goes back to the error remark.

The ‘Error establishing a database connection’ is purely a hosting issue. it works sometimes, so you know that the details there are correct. Because it doesn’t work a lot of the time it means that the hosting server/db server are underpowered and can’t handle the load that they are under. That’s 100% a hosting issue, and your hosting company are the only ones that can help you with that.

Anything else can most likely be found by checking the error logs of your site. This will tell you what errors have occured and where they were. This will give you a verty good place to start de-bugging them and fixing any issues like that. Just remember that it’s also likely that the other issues are caused from an under-powered hosting server as well, so in your case I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the code, just the server.

In fact, two days ago, one of my blog posts received a huge spike in traffic. From my StatCounter report, it is still coming in, but have problem accessing, as it indicates a big drop in traffic since yesterday and today.
