Host Shutting Down Site Because Of A Script?

  • The last two Fridays at just about the same time, my multi-site network has gone down. I found out today that, it’s because my host has been doing it, they have been renaming my index.php file because they said a script was causing unusually high resource usage.

    After being with them for 5 years, they said that I need to upgrade to VPS or dedicated. Ok, I realize I will have to do that at some point. HOWEVER! I have had much higher traffic days in the past without issue. We are getting around 50,000 page views on the network on Fridays for now.

    I was gearing up to move our network to VPS then I found some interesting information with other people having similar issues. Since it just started happening two weeks ago, is it possible, I have a PLUGIN that is causing the problem??

    I have narrowed down a few and 1 could be the Plugin StatSurfer https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/statsurfer/

    I see that plenty of other large traffic blogs are still on shared hosting. Don’t have a problem with switching to VPS if I have to but if we can hold off a little be because it is a plugin causing an issue, I would gladly get rid of that for now.

    I would try that to start with, but also maybe some caching software. At 50k a day, you kind of need to consider VPS anyway, no matter what. Or cloud hosting.

    You’re lucky that’s all they did. Yes, you definitely need to upgrade your hosting.

    We removed all stats plugins from our installs. After a while the databases just get huge. We were big on wp-shortstat for the longest time. We pretty much just give options for Google Analytics as well as a couple custom widgets for sites like statcounter.

    If you’re not doing so, please make sure you’re running an optimize every so often on your database. We do ours via a cron at least once a day. Only takes a few seconds and it does seem to help.

    +1 for the caching as well.

    Still, with that many visits, they are going to want to move off shared an on to a vps.

    Another concern would be the improper use of the rss widget. We’ve had site amdin who had end users using the rss widget to display their own feeds. Like it was a latest post widget. On some installs, this creates a loop that causes load.

    I think we had a thread (or five) about this on the old mu forums. Someone’s going to have to check for me though. I’m on battery.

    Well, we were planning to upgrade to VPS within the same host this November but that might be moved up.

    For those that have had to do this, should it be a pretty smooth transition from Shared to VPS within the same host or am I looking at a borderline nightmare?

    We have about 10 mapped domains to go along with our multisite. It wouldn’t be so bad but we have schools using the subsites for their athletic portals and we cannot afford to have extended downtime for them. Things are moving faster than we expected but I’m fully prepared to move to VPS as soon as I can. Just wondering if we are looking at a lot of downtime (a day or 2) while the migration takes place.

    I’ll feel a lot better when we migrate though!

    Shared to VPS on the same host was, for me, so easy, a caveman could do it. But it depends on the host, I suspect. For me, it was 2 hours downtime.

    hi, I’m the developer of the plugin StatSurfer, but (sorry, I’m italian) I have not understand very much what’s the problem with my plugin…. it create so much datas in the database?

    (the question is only to help me to improve StatSurfer, thanks)
