• I’ve been asked to set up a wordpress blog for a novice user and wonder if someone could suggest a good hosting service, eg I’ve been looking at wordpress.com, bluehost & hostgator so far. The user is a technical novice and just wants to concentrate on writing so an essential feature is automatic updating when a new version is released, as is high reliability and track record, eg length of operation, number of wordpress installations etc. I notice many hosted services don’t seem to do auto back-ups, so a simple point-and click user initiated back-up is also important. Any suggestions / experiences much appreciated.

  • Use wordpress.com.

Almost all hosting companies have a backup of some sort, usually 30 days worth. If you go that route, you will have more control but also at a greater cost.

As esmi stated, WP.com isn’t a bad option. Just make sure you know the benefits of going that route as opposed to a self-hosted option. Read about wp.com vs wp.org if you haven’t done so already.
