hostgator addon domains

Are you using WordPress in multisite mode or just attempting to create separate installations for each domain name?

James I’m using it in both formats.

In that case, either Hostgator’s control panel is mistakingly creating the addon domains as subdomains, or there’s a conflict with how multisite is handling the wildcard subdomains.

You should probably contact Hostgator just to make sure that your account is creating addon domains correctly.

In the mean time, I’ll move this over to the multisite forum and hopefully Andrea or one of our other talented volunteers may have a better suggestion for you.

I think the URL stuffing is on hostgator’s end.

Though I need to ask – if you plan on multiple installs (multisite or not) with multiple domains, why not just ONE install fo WP with the network running and map the other domains (by parking) to each sub-blog?

I am considering moving all of my wordpress blogs to hostgator.

I have two domains. Under each of those domains are multiple installs of wordpress under multiple sub-folders.

If I move to Hostgator, is there a more efficient way to manage the content on all of these sub-blogs (i.e. multi-site mode [which I haven’t touched yet]) ?

Can two domains have one WP installation in multi-site mode, or is it domain by domain?

Here is my problem and the resolution. The former sounds similar to your post so I hope the latter will also apply. I am on shared webhosting. I used Softaculous (it’s like Fantastico, just a script installer) to install WordPress 3.1 into a subdomain (the script also created this subdomain folder at the same time). For the sake of this example let’s call the folder of install wpTesting and the subdomain is https://wpTesting.maindomain.com. I set up my WordPress site in this folder (subdirectory) and it looked great. But the address in the browser for all my pages was still https://www.maindomain.com/wpTesting/etc. I bought a separate domain name and wanted all the addresses to reference https://www.addondomain.org. (Of course, first I pointed that domain name from its registrar to the two name servers of my webhost, then I assigned my webhost to map the incoming domain name as an addon domain pointing to the folder where I had placed WordPress.)Then, I went to the admin panel of WordPress, down to Settings … General … and tried to change the Worpress address (URL) and the Site address (URL) to the addon domain name. I must have messed up. The site wouldn’t load at all, even to correct it. I found my fix via the following posting, https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL and I opted for the easy procedure to edit the database directly. I used the interface phpmyadmin provided by my webhost to select the WordPress database (happened to be named _wp52), then found the wp_options table, then clicked my way to edit the two entries “site” and “home”, making them both say only https://www.addondomain.org and then I refreshed my homepage and the site worked perfectly. All pages and posts now reference only the addon domain, not the main domain name nor the folder of install.

@mnl345 this is the multisite section of the forums. Multisite refers to a *feature* in WordPress, not multiple wordpress installs.

So no, your problem is different and the solution does not apply.
