• Hi,

I’m building a website which will just be for UK visitors within about 30 miles of where I live.

I’m currently using Siteground for another website and have been extremely pleased with their support and service in general.

The new website however, I’m looking to be as quick as possible for UK visitors and I’m now stuck between a UK hosting company I have no experience with who will host my website quite close (45 miles away as the crow flies), vs. hosting with Siteground in Amsterdam (246 miles away as the crow flies).

How much of an effect will this added distance have?

Will other aspects, such as how their servers are setup, have more of an effect on the speed times?

    Thanks

  • A Toronto Canada company’s website that I manage is hosted in a server in Los Angeles California, USA. which is 2174 west of Toronto.

No difference that if it was hosted in Toronto area. (It was hosted in Toronto area before then moved to Los Angeles).

It is a VERY HIGH TRAFFIC site.

The location per say doesn’t matter as how the servers are maintained.

One thing you have to look out for is that whatever you put on your site, the laws of the country it is hosted in will apply.

So something that might be legal in the UK, and it is not in the hosting country then you could get in trouble.

Thanks for the reply, that’s great to know it didn’t make a difference. I’ll stick with the hosting company I know then, as I’ve been really pleased with them
otherwise and this was my only sticking point.

The website shouldn’t be illegal in any country as far as I’m aware, but that’s very interesting to learn about the legal implications of where I host a website, I wasn’t aware of that before.

    Thanks again for your help
