• I just started my blog, https://www.variablemarkup.com, about a month and half ago and I’m hosting at https://www.webhost4life.com. I had used them in the past for windows hosting and was satisfied, but went linux this time and I’ve been having issues. The site often slow taking 10-25 seconds to load, other times it is 1-2 seconds. I’ve also seen 504 errors, which when I research via google, it indicates that it’s a server/network issue at the ISP. I also am using a free monitoring tool and it has showed average uptime of about 80% with a low of 30% and high of 98%. Traceroutes, etc.. show decent speed between the remote sites and the server.

    My questions are,

    1. Should I believe the free monitoring site? I’ve defintiely had performance problems and downtimes like the 504’s but not sure if you can trust a free service. (moni.tor.us)
    2. I looked at Bluehost and Dreamhost, are they any better. Reading reviews, it seems like there’s a fair amount of complaints on speed/downtime, so I don’t know that I would be any better switching.
    3. Is there a better host out there? I don’t mind paying more for quality, but it’s hard to tell what’s better quality for shared hosting from the website.

    Thanks

  • Have you checked out HostGator?

I am using HostMonster and have had no problems with them. They also use Fantastico, and their support for a few issues that I created has been really great.

Let me know if you need further info about them:

It’t no offense to ejcross but HostMonster is definitely the worst one we have ever had. Before using HostMonter, we used StartLogic. We are now using Lunarpages. I could tell you why HostMonster is so bad in detail. But I guess I shouldn’t in a public forum unless somebody asks.

    Macsoft,

Can you email me with the problems that you have had with the m so I can “keep my eyes” out? I haven’t had any problems except when they got hit with a port attack, but that was their entire system.

    Thanks!

A further note on HostGator. I’m using them now and have used them before. Never had any major issues. I am impressed with their service though. I asked a real DUMB question (Bad day) and they were very nice in pointing out the obvious to me. You get alot for the $10 a month.

I just looked at hostgator. Seems like a decent site, but no way to tell their quality of service/uptime.

I did find Netcraft’s Hosting Performance but it only lists the top 50. Anyone know of a similar site that lists some that have been recommended for www.ads-software.com?

Lunarpages did show up in the top 50.

Although, I’m questioning if this is a valid indicator since they are hitting the main hoster webpage, which I would think, the hoster is going to great lengths to keep operational.

I use AN Hosting or MidPhase [moderated – no affiliate links allowed!] regularly. Like any host that is rapidly growing, they’ve had a few hiccups, but what I like is that they are there 24/7 by phone.

I even have my own personal support person that I can dial directly.

You cannot beat that. Plus their control panels let me do pretty much anything and everything I need to do.

    Reasonable pricing, too.

    HTH
