    Hey, I just installed WordPress and I’m actually trying to update to 3.0

    I keep getting an error message on the Connection Information screen, which reads: “Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.”

    It asks for my hostname, username, password, and connection type. The username and password, I’m certain I have right, the hostname should just be “cuttingroomcomic.com” and I’ve tried both “FTP” and “FTPS” (not that I know what either of those mean).

    I’ve tried adding plugins as well, and get a similar message. “Failed to connect to FTP Server cuttingroomcomic.com:21”

    Anyone know what’s up?

  • I just checked and you are using GoDaddy. I also checked and I don’t get a response if I FTP to your domain name or your numeric IP address.

    Time to talk to GoDaddy Support . Don’t even talk to them about WordPress. Just say that you can’t get FTP to work on your account.

    My favourite way to test FTP is from the Command Line (Start-Programs-Accessories-Command Line in Windows) by typing ftp 64.202.189.170 or whatever they tell you is your ftp host name. You should get a user name prompt. (quit command gets you out of ftp; exit command gets you out of the Command Line)

    Thanks. I’ll give them a call. How do I test FTP from a Mac?

    Pretty much the same way. Open a terminal and type ftp [hostname]
    or ftp [numeric-ip]

    A successful attempt should prompt a password dialog.

    I’m having the same problem, but I can connect to my web host with FTP with no problem, using the method you suggested above and my regular FTP program. I’m also trying to upgrade to 3.0.

    OK, I figured it out with help from another thread that explained it more clearly. The settings for upgrading are the settings you use to upload files to your webhost via FTP. The hostname may or may not be your domain name. (Mine isn’t.) And the username and password are not the one you use to log into WordPress, but into your webhost to access your files.

    This is completely unclear in the upgrade interface.
