I’m baffled. I’m prototyping a website using the latest versions of OceanWP and Elementor Pro. My header menu items will not show the hover color changes correctly, no matter what I try. Similarly, I put an Elementor Nav Menu widget just above the footer at the bottom of the page for debugging purposes. That menu works fine in Elementor, but it does not work correctly on the live website (the hover effect appears on all menu choices simultaneously). You can see the site here:
    https://www.thewoodengineer.com

Again, hovering over the menu choices does nothing. If I set the Links Effect in the Header/Menu Customization panel to something like Circular Reveal, that effect will show, but the hover color changes still do not appear. The menu functions, it’s just that hovering over a selection shows nothing.

I tried disabling all plugins except OceanWP Extra, cleared the cache, and still no change. FYI, there is nothing in the wp-content/uploads/oceanwp folder for the website.

For debugging purposes, I copied the home page to another page:
    https://www.thewoodengineer.com/home-copy2

That page WORKS FINE! I even tried making that my new static home page, but then the menu problem came back.

The Home Page Attribute (in WordPress Dashboard) are set to Default Template (if I choose Landing Page or Elementor Canvas setting, the menu goes away completely, as does the return-to-top arrow at the bottom right corner of the screen, and I want that to be there).

Let me know what to else to try to fix the problem. Thanks!

Hello, what hover effect doesn’t work?
Also, if you use the landing or elementor canvas templates, these templates remove the header and footer so you need to use the default template.

I am using the default template. As I said, the two pages are set up the same way:

https://www.thewoodengineer.com is the home page, and its header menu items do NOT change color as I hover over them. Also, the Elementor menu at the very bottom of the page shows ALL menu items selected, with hovering having no effect.

https://www.thewoodengineer.com/home-copy2 is a direct copy of the home page – AND IT WORKS CORRECTLY! Hovering over the header menu results in the menu items changing color properly. Also, the Elementor menu at the bottom of the page works as it should.

Both pages appear to have the same settings in WordPress:
    Default template
Main: 100% full width, Sidebar: Default, Margins: Enabled
    Shortcodes: None defined
Header: Display Top bar: Disabled, Display header: Enabled, Header style: Transparent
    Logo: Nothing selected
    Menu: Main. No colors selected
    Title: Disabled
    Breadcrumbs: Default
Footer: Disabled. Display copyright area: Default

Try the two pages, and you should see the difference as you hover over the header menu.

Let me know if you need more information.

Hi, oh okay, now I understand the problem, thanks for the explanation ??
Have you tried to disable all your plugins? Even Elementor? Because maybe you have added a css code just for your homepage and you forgot about it, so when you select a homepage you have this problem.

I tried that. Without elementor the formatting is all messed up, but the header menu still does not work right.

I don’t think I added any css code.

Should I try reinstalling a fresh copy of OceanWP, if so, how do I do that?

If you can, yes the best thing would be to re-install the theme and Elementor on a fresh install, can you create a second site? Like that you will be able to see your main site instead of resetting it.

Forgive my ignorance – I’m new at this! Would a second site require registering a new domain name? I don’t know how to proceed with “a fresh install,” so I would appreciate your advice.

It depends of your host, if you can’t create a second site, do a backup of your current site, then install the Database Reset plugin and launch it, this plugin will delete everything on your site, so you will have a fresh install, then create a menu and check if you have the same issue.

I use webhostinghub.com. I can create what they call a subdomain under the existing domain name, such as test.thewoodengineer.com. Would that work for this purpose?

Resetting the WordPress database makes me very nervous, as this website is the second of two domain names I have set up with Webshosting hub. Will the database reset action affect the other website, as well?

I’m obviously out of my element here…

Another clue: If I change the home page setting from “default” to “Elementor Canvas” the header menu goes away (as expected), but the Elementor menu widget at the very bottom of the page STILL DOES NOT WORK (the links work, but the hover “frames” still cover all buttons simultaneously – all the time).

In my latest debugging experiment, I activated a different theme, DELETED the OceanWP theme and the OceanWP Extra plugin, and then reinstalled OceanWP and the OceanWP Extra plugin. NOTHING CHANGED IN THE HEADER MENU PROBLEM.

Now, however, when I go to Dashboard, this message appears near the top of the screen, overwriting some of the WordPress menu area on the left:

Notice: has_cap was called with an argument that is deprecated since version 2.0.0! Usage of user levels is deprecated. Use capabilities instead. in /home/benttw5/public_html/TheWoodEngineer.com/wp-includes/functions.php on line 4031

Everything still seems to function, but the message appears every time I select something on the Dashboard.

    Now what should I try?

    Thread Starter ddelker

    (@ddelker)

FYI: I just found the plugin that caused the strange error message and removed it. That fixed the error message.

Unfortunately, the original menu problem still exists.

Hi, yes please, can you create a subdomain, import nothing, just create a new page, add your menu as your current site, add it as homepage then check if you have the same issue.

    Thread Starter ddelker

    (@ddelker)

FYI, I installed WP on a subdomain, installed OceanWP and Elementor, then transferred my site to the subdomain. Everything worked fine there.

Finally, I reset the WP database on the main site, reinstalled WP and OceanWP, then tranferred things back to the site. I’m pleased to announce that everything works correctly now, including the hover effects on the theme menu and the Elementor Nav Menu.

Thanks much to OceanWP for their support!
