How are the stars calculated from an Up/Down rating?

Hello, since google uses 1-5 stars for display of ratings, I’d like to know how your plugin tells google what the average star rating is if a user can only Vote Up, or Vote Down…
I like the idea of up and down voting, its easier… but I’m concerned on how this calculates
