After a nightmare bill from Taxamo showed up today, I decided to just stop selling digital to the EU and ticked the box within the main settings of the plugin (thanks btw!). But how are variable items handled and *what* types of products are *forbidden*? Is it any product marked “downloadable/virtual”?

The Taxamo plugin had created an “e-Book” box to tick on all the products but now that’s gone away since I disabled it. Just want to make sure my EU customers can still by “shipped” items even when they’re part of a variable product. (I sell hard and soft copies of books).

Maybe I can answer my own question. On variable products, let’s say I’m forbidding EU sales on items with “Zero Rate” for taxes – those product variations will be restricted on the checkout page, correct?

What if I have a free item where the parent is marked at “None” for Tax Status – those can still go through no matter the person’s location?

    Hi Jennifer,

There’s a setting in WooCommerce -> EU VAT Compliance to allow you to indicate which tax classes are used for VAT-able goods. Items in the cart which are in those tax classes will not go through the check out. It sounds, from your second post, like you figured that bit out.

Yes – though that sounds like an odd configuration; if an item is classified zero-rated for taxes, then isn’t that mutually exclusive with an item being VAT liable? (i.e. zero-rated for tax != VAT-liable).

What if I have a free item where the parent is marked at “None” for Tax Status – those can still go through no matter the person’s location?

Non-taxable goods won’t be blocked by this plugin.

Note that instead of Taxamo’s recurring fees, you might be interested in the Premium version of this plugin – https://www.simbahosting.co.uk/s3/product/woocommerce-eu-vat-compliance/ – it can take a VAT number from a EU business buyer. EU businesses are VAT exempt (this is how the VAT system works – only consumers in the EU are meant to pay VAT), so for such customers you can still sell to them, but need neither to charge nor collect VAT. (Consumers can still be blocked – the relevant option in the plugin in this case is that “EU buyers must provide a valid VAT number” which, as I say, is in the Premium version (only)).
